Dear Hoopeston Area Schools family:
We have been made aware of a nationwide breach of cybersecurity from our student information system provider. We share your concerns and are in communication with PowerSchool to secure information and assurances about the steps their company is taking to secure our school's data and ensure this type of intrusion does not happen again.
PowerSchool asked us to share the following information with you:
PowerSchool is writing to make you aware of a recent cybersecurity incident involving its software which provides the Student Information System (SIS) for Hoopeston Area Schools.
On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, PowerSchool informed your school's leadership team that we experienced a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain PowerSchool SIS customer data. The data is controlled, maintained, stored, and hosted by PowerSchool after it is uploaded by your school. Unfortunately, PowerSchool has confirmed that the information belongs to some of Hoopeston Area’s families and educators.
PowerSchool wishes to inform your school that the taken data primarily includes parent and student contact information with data elements such as name and address information. Across their customer base, they have determined that for a portion of individuals, some personally identifiable information (PII), such as social security numbers (SSN) and medical information, was impacted. Powerschool is working with urgency to complete their investigation and determine whether PII belonging to our students was included.
Protecting our students is something PowerSchool takes seriously. PowerSchool has assured school officials that more information and resources (including credit monitoring or identity protection services if applicable) will be provided to you as it becomes available.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
